If you like security software that slows your system to a crawl and constantly nags you with pop-up windows, requiring you to make decisions to either permit or deny access to system and network resources, Zone Alarm is the product for you. For the rest of us, who have been able to retain a bit of sanity, steer away from that security suite. Try Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. It’s remarkably fast and reliably handles security tasks without hassling the user.

Maybe my copy was just defective because I used ZoneAlarm three years ago, and it was fine. This time around, it would not install properly on my Windows XP SP2 mchine. At the point of the installation when the machine is supposed to be restarted, my machine kept rebooting. I had to totally uninstall ZoneAlarm and remove all traces of it from my machine in safe mode before I could reboot my PC and get it to work again. I am guessing that ZoneAlarm no longer supports Windows XP even though the packaging (at least one side of the packaging) claims it does. Needless to say I returned it and purchased a different security suite I am really happy with.

I finally switched to bit defender after using zone alarm for several years. Zone alarm dramatically slowed down internet access via Internet Explorer with a high speed modem, from an XP system. It also would not allow access to pdf documents, got in the way of software downloads from a reputable company (I had to get a refund), and denied access to website windows with a “forbidden page” message, without identifying that the source of the problem was zone alarm. Attempts to fix the access problem via zone alarm frequently asked questions resulted in advice that was impossible to implement because of use of acronyms that are unknown to a non-expert. I did not want to pay $3 per minute for paid help because ten minutes advice would buy a new software package from another source. I did not know that the internet slowdown was caused by Zone Alarm until I switched brands.

I was a long time ZoneAlarm user before I started having problems when I bought a system in April of 2008 with Vista. I fought with my system for almost a year and in February 2009 I gave up and now I’m using Norton Internet Security.

I was experiencing hangs and system lockups and had to perform hard reboots 2-3 times a week. I searched long and hard for settings to avoid the hangs but found nothing. Various updates to ZoneAlarm through the year did nothing to fix the problem. I even rebuilt my system by reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Vista so I KNEW there woudl be no remnants of the McAfee product that was pre-installed on my system but once I installed ZoneAlarm, the hangs started right up again.

I also had numerous problems trying to sync my PDA with Vista unless I shutdown ZoneAlarm.

On top of all of that, I posted messages in the ZoneLabs user forum explaining my problem and how I’ve decided to switch to Norton’s. They deleted my post. I guess they can’t take criticism of their product when they can’t resolve their issues. You shouldn’t have to go through all the problems you get when installing ZoneAlarm.

I have not had any problems yet with Nortons.

I’ve also seen performance comparisons and Nortons is MUCH better.
