Registry Mechanic 6.0 is a handy utility that safely cleans & repairs your computer’s registry. As many of us are often installing, upgrading or simply removing software applications, registry errors seem to abound. Registry Mechanic 6.0 does a good job repairing registry values while enhancing system functionality and immutability resulting in fewer errors. After scanning the registry, the program optionally initiates a system restoration point before repairing any errors to safely return your unit to its previous status.

I’ve found utilizing a registry cleaner along with regular virus and spyware scanning and hard drive defragging to be a good computer maintenance regiment! Registry Mechanic’s 12-month, 3-computer license should be adequate for most home users.

Hey, changing the oil in your car every 3,000 miles is a good maintenance mindset. Do the same to your computers O.S. with good maintenance practices.

    Mini Update: 10.02.07

In addition to Registry Mechanic; for those using I.E. 7.0, try a freeware ad-blocker called IE 7.0 Pro; an excellent companion utility to go along with Registry Mechanic.

    And one more thing: 10.03.07

As PC Tools just rolled out Registry Mechanic 7.0 on 09.12.07, it appears a 3-computer license retail disc is not yet available. No matter, the above product is immediately upgradeable to version 7.0 upon registration.

The longer you use Windows XP (and presumably Vista) the more clogged your registry will become until your computer eventually slows to a crawl. This product cleans your registry without crashing your computer, bringing about a marked improvement in performance.

Norton SystemWorks 2008 Premier Edition 11.0, Fix-It Utilities 8 Professional and others claim to do the same thing, but this is the only product I’ve found that actually does it. Highly recommended.

UPDATE (11/18/08): PC Tools has apparently changed the name of this product to PC TOOLS DESKTOP MAESTRO 3 USER (WIN 2000,XP,VISTA). I’m now running it, and as far as I can see, it’s the same product.

I purchased new software, because it was less expensive than the annual renewal “service” from PC Tools. What a mistake. The software is set up to accept only one license key. Uninstall did not solve this problem. Their website support said that I should have renewed through PC Tools and that I must contact support. I submitted my request and received an email where I was scolded for not renewing through their web site. They gave me instructions that I followed exactly but received an error message “Sorry, that is an invalid license code. Please ensure you have entered the License Name and License Code exactly as provided.” I replied, as they suggested, but they will not respond now, after several attempts. I followed further instructions on their support website and uninstalled, then reinstalled in “SAFE MODE”. It did not work either. What a pain. I don’t need this software. Really. I lost a few dollars but I figure it’s a cheap lesson. I installed CCleaner 2.05 and I hope that I never have to use a PC Tools product again.

This product only does slightly more than the free version. It will constantly tell me about a number of problems and only fixes the same problems each time. Mind you not fix them but make them go away until you do another scan. What’s up with that? I wanted a product that could help me identify problems, then either fix them or tell me how I could fix them. While this one does some of that it doesn’t do much more than the free version online.

Registry Mechanic was installed with no problem, and worked as expected. This was a renewal of a subscription, which I didn’t know was required, so I didn’t renew online, but bought the product from Amazon in a retail box. Their registration process was mind boggling. A product key comes with the CD, but when you try to register it, it shows the key from the prior version, so I couldn’t tell if I had the new or the older version? After about 2 weeks and several emails, they explained that the original key is what they keep on their site when you renew, even though you entered the new key that came with the CD.
