Hi!

What operating system do you have? I have a Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 in my Windows Vista Home Premium, and I have encountered a similar problem like yours. When it became silver that means that Kaspersky is not running! .. What I did was to reinstall Kaspersky and restart my computer. Actually it happened more than once. One time because I was updating and something got corrupted for some reason! Another time because I was doing a registry clean (an automatic registry fix) that seemed to interfere with Kaspersky!! However, every time I was able to fix it with reinstalling the software again and restarting my PC!

Hope this can help! Best wishes!

After many years of using free A/V and anti malware I some months ago installed a Norton trial Internet security 2011on my daughters and granddaughters computers.I always felt Norton was a huge resource hog but the latest version was vastly improved. So much so that after three months I have installed it on my computer which seems considerably more responsive. My choice now until something better comes along.

These are a few tips to help secure your computer at least somewhat ... .I am not saying none of these programs do not have false-alarms or you'll be 100% protected all the time.. These are just a few tips.

PLEASE do not let people talk you into "you get what you pay for" .. with the few exceptions, most of my favorite and security site "best programs" are free.

Anti-viruses -
1) Avast - ( http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download ) (Feb 11, 2010 Update to Avast Comment) This scanner is considered by many tech to be the #1 free anti-virus. I once called Avast sluggish on my old (XP Pro, 1.8GHZ, 768MB Ram) laptop; HOWEVER, after doing an upgrade to Avast, I notice no lag at all .. even on my old machine. I don't care how great a scanner is, if it lags and slows the system to a crawl … Avast is not one of those scanners and the fact it provides great protection is .. well the point of a good Anti-virus

2) Avira - ( http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus ) This is the scanner that I recommend just as much as Avast. I love Avira and even if I am using Avast on certain computers ... I still recommend Avira 100%. Detection only slightly behind Avast ... sites and articles tend to deduct "points" for the fact they like Avast's Interface better. I find it very clean and easy to use, however.

If I am installing an Anti-virus on a system that may not have the “newest” resources, I choice to install Avira on it. Even my older system (XP, 768MB Ram, 1.79GHz Processor), has NO slowdown at all with Avira (no matter what I read from PCMag reviews) and it's great protection.

Those are Free, but if you feel the need to want to pay for one (for whatever reason), try (3) Eset NOD32, which provides great protection and no system lag

4) MS Security Essentials- This is one that I am conflicted about. Some people love it … It is FREE … and some sites say it detects just as good as scanners like Norton.

Other sites and reviews say that it detects “so so” … it FORCES you to download a 60MB+ update as soon as you install the 12MB+ program and it FORCES you to have Windows update on “Download and install all updates without prompt”.. even if I was on high speed internet, I want control over that feature.

Firewall -
I would recommend Comodo's Firewall ( http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ) 100%

and Outpost ( http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/ ) makes a great firewall product and they have a free or pro version available. Both firewalls are easy to use and configure

Malware/Spyware related -
These are great programs to have, but do not confuse them with anti-viruses

MalwareBytes ( http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ) -
I have seen many users with scanners they think are good, have computers that are completely infected. They install Malwarebytes and after a scan (maybe two, “just to be sure”) in safe mode, there system is running smooth again and malware free.

Super Anti-spyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/) - the only malware/spyware scanner that even comes close to Malwarebytes

maybe the only other addition would be Spyware Blaster( http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ ) which is a freeware that helps prevent (to a degree) drive-by spyware active-x installs on various browsers ..

Honestly, the other scanners are not worth it.... even the freeware scanners

1. Reboot into safe mode with networking. If it does not work, continue anyway
2 .Open Internet Explorer, choose Tools menu and select Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab and then on the LAN Settings button. Uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN under the Proxy Server section and press OK.
4. Then start task manager or process explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx ) and stop all processes that are like combination of random letters. If it fails, continue anyway, or check this guide : http://www.2-viruses.com/remove-internet-antivirus-2011 for more specific names
5. Start MSConfig and disable all startup entries that launch processes from within your user directory, for example App Data folder... You might need to reboot after this step, to safe mode with networking again.
6. Download good anti-malware tool like spyware doctor or malwarebytes. Scan with it, and delete stuff it finds (if it wont remove it itself).
7. Reboot.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version)
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Reboot into safemode with networking (restart computer and start tapping F8 until the option appears) and run it. Allow it to update itself and run a scan. When it's done (let it fix the problems it finds), reboot and run it again. In a lot of cases this is all you need to do.

Evil Virus!!!! Download Microsoft security esstentials if it let's u, if not, buy antivirus at bestbuy or somewhere, unless it is locking up your comp. If it is, re install your operating system using a windows install disk, and then restore your data from a backup that I HOPE YOU MADE, so that you can get your data back, if it was ever erased.

Actually most times there is no need to rebuild or reinstalled your PC windows system, what you need is a PC protector. Tuneup360 is good choice, you just need to click one big “fix now” button and get your computer fixed at once.

http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

Has higher detection rates then Kaspersky and Norton....and will not slow your computer down...and who ever said was free was no good....ought to re-think that position....cause some of the big name companies like norton and kaspersky get infected more.........

I've had poor experiences with Norton. Very slow and unreliable, updates take forever, and any computer I've had it on has gotten viruses. I bought Webroot Anti Virus and I will never try another product. Easy to use interface, fast scanning, and easy to configure. In my opinion, Webroot is the best choice for your computer. Not to sound like a commercial ha-ha, but still, Webroot is good :D

PS: There's a reason why they give it free. Free is not always good.

it also stops thigns you might not WANT it to, but they can be configured in Exceptions...
