I am not a computer wizard at all, but have managed to understand this s/w. It’s parental controls have our kids frustrated, but I don’t care… it’s keeping their surfing down to homework needs and that’s what the computer’s for. Prior to the install, they spent hours on myspace and other such sites, and we ended up with a nagware virus as a result.

It’s been on our desktop and laptop, both XP OS for six weeks now and so far so good.

Product was easy to install and performed well. Maybe too well. Blocked all attempts to connect to the computer even from computer allowed on the same network. It also seems, but not proven, to add a “skipping” to MP3 playbacks. Still working on that. As far as Virus protection, I have used CA for many years and found it to be effective.

I had CA Antivirus 2008 and was pleased with it. When the subscription was up for renewal I ‘upgraded’ to this steaming pile of dung, thinking it would be better than the stand-alone antivirus. Wrong. Very wrong. It has hijacked my computer. I was trying to register my wife for an all-women’s triathlon, which parental controls blocked for being adult content. I attempted to override with the password, which it says is incorrect. The password worked earlier today on an equally not-adult but blocked-by-CA website and I changed nothing in between. Attempts to change / reset the password have not solved the problem. The CA FAQ section has a solution, but only for IE6 users, this is in Firefox. I’ve searched for a way to turn off parental controls and have not found one yet. IF it is possible, it should not be so difficult to find. And I don’t want parental controls on this machine anyway. It’s mine, no kids to protect here. Sheesh.

The firewall is another annoying feature. Prior to install, both Google Chrome and Safari worked fine. They are now unable to access the internet and I’ve spent too many hours trying to find the solution. Couldn’t find any way to turn it off either. It may not be the firewall, but it has something to do with this program as they were both working prior to installation of CA.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. Maybe I don’t possess the requisite computer skills. Maybe I should have studied computer engineering instead of chemical engineering. I want a program that is relatively easy to install and use, that does what it says, and that doesn’t completely disrupt my internet usage. Is that too much to ask? In the case of CA’s Internet Security Suite Plus 2009…yes, it is too much to ask.
